Database Developer - SQL Server/T-SQL/Database Migration
Event Title: “Database Developer - SQL Server/T-SQL/Database Migration”
I. Details of the event/activity
I started May 29 and finished May 30, 2024, I completed an online course on Udemy about database migration using Oracle SQL Developer. The course covered how to move a database from Microsoft SQL Server to Oracle. It included topics like setting up a migration repository, connecting to the old database, checking the current database state, converting the database to Oracle, translating SQL objects, creating scripts for the new database, and moving data to Oracle.
II. Reflections on the webinar/activity give rise to (learnings):
As a student, the course for me is informative but challenging. I also learned the importance of checking the current state of the database before starting the migration process, this is to avoid affecting what's in the live database. I also started to understand how to convert database models and translate T-SQL objects to Oracle SQL. While I didn’t grasp all the details, I got a sense of how these steps help keep the database working properly after the migration. This course gave me a basic idea of the key steps involved in database migration, which is important for backend development.
III. Reflections on possibilities on implementing some of the webinar input on a
practical level (practical application of learning)
Even though I’m still learning, I can see some practical applications of what I’ve learned. For instance, I can try setting up a migration repository and connecting to different databases in my practice projects. Attempting to capture and convert database models will be a good exercise for when I upgrade or migrate databases in the future. The basics of generating scripts and moving data will be useful skills to develop further, helping me understand how to handle database migrations more smoothly in the future.
IV. Positive feedback (on the event organization)
The course was well organized and easy to follow. The instructor did a good job of explaining each step and provided practical examples that were helpful, it’s just i have hard time following some of the instructions, especially the technica part. The content was arranged in a logical order, making it easier to follow along. I appreciated the hands-on approach, which allowed me to practice some of the concepts as I learned them.
V. Suggestions for improvements to be made/consider for future activities
While the course was very helpful, it could be improved by offering more details on troubleshooting common issues during database migration. Including more real-world examples would also help in understanding how to apply these principles in different situations. Additionally, providing downloadable resources or quick-reference guides would be beneficial for students like me who are still getting a grasp on these concepts.
